1839-C Quarter Eagle, XF Details
Rare HM-2 Variety

1839-C $2 1/2 HM-2, R.6 -- Cleaned -- NGC Details. XF. The berry is prominent on this example of the HM-2 dies, although detached from its stem. A bold die crack between the eagle's right (facing) wing and neck suggests a late die state for the reverse die, which soon failed. This variety accounts for about 7% of the extant 1839-C quarter eagles, and represents one of about 25 survivors struck with this short-lived reverse die. Moderate-to-heavy weakness at the central reverse is a combination of die state and wear. The obverse is sharper, with a relevant scratch between star 4 and the nose.
