Bid increments determine the lowest amount you may bid on a particular lot. Normally, bids must be at least one bidding increment over the current bid. However, podium, fax, phone and mail bidders submit bids at various times without knowing the current bid and must be on-increment or at a half increment (called a cut bid). Reserve (If Any) Not Posted Yet:
Although many lots will not get reserves, this signifies that we have not yet posted any reserves to this entire auction. Reserves are usually posted approximately 3 days prior to the closing for Internet-only auctions, and approximately 7 days prior to the live session for Signature auctions.
Consignor Has Not Yet Submitted a Reserve:
Although the consignor's agreement allows a reserve on this lot, the deadline for submitting such a reserve has elapsed. If consignor submits a reserve post-deadline and the item fails to meet that reserve, we may charge the consignor a higher reserve fee.

Hawaiian Coins, Patterns, Trial Strikings, and Fantasy Pieces
An incredible collection of Hawaiian coins in gold, silver, nickel, copper, and platinum, as follows:1881 5 Cents in Nickel AU 50 Reverse Scratches. Medcalf-2CN.1. One of the original 200 Paris strikes on a thin, nickel planchet. The obverse has a head of King Kalakaua I facing left and the reverse has a garter, surmounted by the Hawaiian crown, enclosing the numeral 5. At the top of the crown is a cross, found on all of the original 200 pieces. The last example to appear at auction was sold in Superior's February 1999 auction for more than $25,000.
1881 5 Cents in Aluminum PR 63. Medcalf-2CN.1. A brilliant proof, struck on a thin aluminum planchet with no cross on top of the crown. The obverse has a head of King Kalakaua I facing left and the reverse has a garter, surmounted by the Hawaiian crown, enclosing the numeral 5. This piece was struck from slightly different dies than the 200 original, nickel pieces and was not struck in 1881. Very few pieces have appeared at auction and the last specimen was sold by Superior in February, 1999 and brought $9,775.
1883 Eighth Dollar, or Hapawalu, in Silver PR 65. Medcalf-2CS.2. A brilliant proof, struck on a silver planchet, with a reeded edge, and with "Lazy 8s" in the date. The obverse has a head of King Kalakaua I facing right and the reverse has HAPAWALU within a wreath with EIGHTH DOL. below. This type with the lazy 8s was a later striking, probably from the original hubs, which were undated, with the different type 8s included when the date was added. It was not an official issue, but it is extremely rare and highly collectible and this type has not appeared at auction for quite some time.
1883 Eighth Dollar, or Hapawalu, Copper Pattern Trial Strike 1883 PR 65. Medcalf-2CPC.1. A brilliant proof, struck on a copper planchet, with a reeded edge, and with normal 8s in the date. This issue was designed by Charles Barber and struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The obverse has a head of King Kalakaua I facing right, and the reverse has HAPAWALU within a wreath, with EIGHTH DOL. below. This example is one of the 18 official pieces struck in copper as die trials for the unissued eighth dollar pattern. Extremely rare, no examples have appeared at auction in recent years.
Platinum Three Piece Set, including: 1883 eighth dollar with lazy 8s PR 63, Medcalf-2CS.2, the obverse has a head of King Kalakaua I facing right and the reverse has HAPAWALU within a wreath, with EIGHTH DOL. below; 1884 quarter dollar MS 65, similar to Medcalf-2CS.3, the obverse has a head of King Kalakaua I facing right and the reverse has crowned arms dividing ¼ and D, with HAPAHA below; and an 1884 half dollar MS 64, similar to Medcalf-2CS.4, the obverse has a head of King Kalakaua I facing right and the reverse has crowned and mantled arms, dividing ½ and DOL, with HAPALUA below. All three pieces are Uncirculated with slightly granular surfaces. These three pieces are unofficial issues, probably struck at a later date, possibly Ex: The Palace Collections of Egypt (the King Farouk sale), lots 1502, 1503, and 1504. The Farouk sale catalog calls all three pieces unique, but there may be two or three pieces known of each.
Gold Two Piece Set, including: 1884 quarter dollar MS 63, similar to Medcalf-2CS.3, the obverse has a head of King Kalakaua I facing right and the reverse has crowned arms dividing ¼ and D, with HAPAHA below; and an 1884 half dollar MS 63, similar to Medcalf-2CS.4, the obverse has a head of King Kalakaua I facing right and the reverse has crowned and mantled arms, dividing ½ and DOL, with HAPALUA below. Both pieces are Uncirculated with slightly granular surfaces. As with the platinum issues, these pieces are unofficial issues, probably struck at a later date, possibly, Ex: The Palace Collections of Egypt (the King Farouk sale), lot 110. Two or three pieces of each are known in gold. None of the gold or platinum strikes have appeared at auction for quite some time.
So-Called Trial Hub Strike of the 1883 quarter dollar on a gold bar MS 62. While interesting, according to Don Medcalf, (who owned this piece many years ago), it is a spurious creation from an unknown source. (#10997)
