Description:
1858 Flying Eagle Cent
Judd-202, Pollock-245, PR64
1858 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-202, Pollock-245, R.5, PR64 NGC.
Design.
The obverse combines a rather ungainly Flying Eagle design that famed pattern collector Rogers M. Fred, Jr. attributed to Anthony Paquet, with a Laurel Wreath reverse showing six-leaf clusters. An olive sprig and three arrows are bound at the base of the wreath. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge.

Commentary.
As quoted in Pollock, pattern collector Fred wrote, " ... the letters on this obverse type are taller, thinner, and more condensed than on the large Flying Eagle type. This is the type of lettering used by Paquet on other coins and medals so I think that he probably designed this obverse. It also has the same awkward appearance to the eagle that is found on many of his other designs." This cent is found in five- (Pollock-245) and six-leaf (Pollock-246) clusters, with the latter R.6 and the former R.5. This piece is a five-leaf example.

Physical Description.
The reddish-tan surfaces show a couple of faint smudges on the obverse and a dark spot above the eagle's wing, while the reverse is a tad nicer, and might rate a PR65 if taken on its own merits. Pleasing nonetheless. NGC Census: 13 in PR64, 7 finer. PCGS Population: 13 in PR64; 9 finer including a PR64 Cameo (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Bowers and Merena (5/1993), lot 2403.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
