Description:
Interesting 1859 Pattern Cent, MS64
Judd-227, Low R.6
1859 P1C Indian Cent, Judd-227, Pollock-271, Low R.6, MS64 NGC.
Design.
A regular 1859-dated cent die was mated with a pattern reverse die displaying a small ornamental shield between the upper points of an oak wreath. ONE CENT, in two lines, fills the central design area. Struck in copper-nickel with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
Although tested on several patterns dated 1858 and 1859, the reverse design of Judd-227 never appeared on a regular cent issue. United States Pattern Coins by Judd references an 1860 comment by Mint Director James Ross Snowden that sheds light on the reason for the failure: "The objection to this was that the shield had the appearance of a harp."

Physical Description.
Pale red-gold coloration dominates the surfaces of this boldly struck cent pattern. A dark toning spot between the E of AMERICA and the Indian's headdress is noted. NGC Census: 4 in MS64, 1 finer. PCGS Population: 3 in MS64, none finer. (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Bergin Sale (Stack's, 6/1984).
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (PCGS# 11931)
