Description:
Popular 1795 B-5, BB-27 Dollar, AU58
1795 $1 Flowing Hair, Three Leaves AU58 PCGS. Ex: Hesselgesser. B-5, BB-27, R.1. An early die state, although an exact determination of the die state may require rewriting the standard die states reported in the literature. At least one, and possible two, of the "die cracks" described in the Bowers Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, are actually flowlines from extensive die wear. The B-5, BB-27 die marriage is far more common than any other 1795 variety, so the dies used in production of these pieces suffered extensive die clashing, cracking, lapping, and erosion. In fact the 1795 B-5, BB-27 die combination accounts for nearly half of all 1795 Flowing Hair dollar varieties known today.
This piece is a splendid near-Mint representative with nearly full satin luster behind the deep lilac, blue, and iridescent toning on both sides. The diagnostic raised bar in the left obverse field, near the top hair lock, is full and sharp. All other details are similarly bold, except for the center of the reverse, with flat breast feathers as so often seen. A few light adjustment marks are visible at various points along the obverse rim. There is no evidence of die lapping, so this piece was probably struck rather early in the life of the die pairing.
Specific die details include die lines from the outer point of each star from star 9 to 13, extending to the border. The reverse has a die line from the left stem end to the border, and a faint die crack joining the tops of IC.(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 24WZ, PCGS# 6852)
