Description:
Extraordinary 1798 B-11, BB-111 Dollar, XF45
Possibly the Finest Known 1798 B-11
1798 $1 Large Eagle, Pointed 9 XF45 NGC. B-11, BB-111, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State III to IV. When RARCOA offered this piece in Auction '86, they described it as: "Bold Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated, with underlying luster and attractive tone. Perfect die state, listed as R-6, though R-5 would probably be more accurate. The only example of similar quality was the Bergen specimen, which was a later die state, so this may possibly be the finest known of the variety." In fact, it is the very first piece listed in the Notable Specimens section of the Bowers-Borckardt reference.
Although not the "perfect die state" that RARCOA claimed, it is one of the earliest die states we have seen. A bulge is evident in the lower right obverse, and a crack extends part way along the bulge, beginning at the border and crossing three points of star 13, ending midway to Liberty's chin. This die marriage is known in a number of different die states, from perfect to extensively cracked. This early intermediate die state will be of considerable interest to specialists.
