1801 B-1, BB-211 Silver Dollar, MS62
Only Five Certified Finer for the Date
1801 $1 MS62 NGC. B-1, BB-211, R.3. Bowers-Borckardt Die State IV. This is a late die state with reverse die cracks, but not the latest as there is no evidence of the die bulging at AMER. Only four die varieties of 1801 silver dollars are known (five if the proof novodel is counted). With a total estimated population of less than 1,500 coins for all varieties, in all grades, the 1801 is rarer than any other Heraldic Eagle date. Mint State pieces are especially elusive, as the population data indicates. Just seven examples certified MS62 appear in the combined NGC and PCGS census, with only five finer coins. Those figures include examples of all four varieties.
This specimen is fully lustrous with satiny silver surfaces. The strike is typical with slight weakness at the centers. Both sides are mostly light silver-gray, with hints of gold, and splashes of steel-blue patina. Census: 4 in 62, 3 finer (4/11).
