Description:
1840 Seated Liberty Dollar, PR62
Rare First Date of Design, Ex: Queller
1840 $1 PR62 PCGS. CAC. The Seated Liberty design was introduced on silver dollars in 1840, and an unknown, but undoubtedly small, number of proof examples was struck for collectors. Experts estimate the initial mintage at 20-30 pieces, but Walter Breen believed additional specimens were struck at a later date. The existence of restrikes is controversial, and population data coincides well with the initial estimate, when adjusted for resubmissions and crossovers. Currently, PCGS has certified only this specimen in PR62, with nine finer, while NGC has graded five examples in PR62, with 20 pieces finer (9/11).
The present coin is a sharply detailed PR62 example, with spectacular dark apricot toning covering both sides. The surfaces are moderately reflective, typical of the proofs of this era, underneath the toning.
Ex: The Queller Family Collection of Silver Dollars (Heritage, 4/2008), lot 2137, realized $17,825.(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 24ZP, PCGS# 6981)
