Description:
Rare and Underrated B-10 1798 Dollar
1798 $1 Large Eagle MS62 NGC. B-10, BB-109. R.5. Die State III. This lustrous Mint State Dollar is possibly the finest known example of the 1798 B-10, BB-109 die marriage. This cataloger first observed this exact coin on the bourse floor at the August, 1998 Portland ANA Convention. In the World's Greatest Collection of Silver Coins (WGC), Numismatic Gallery, 1945, lot 35 was cataloged as Uncirculated, and is listed in the Bowers book as AU55. The WGC specimen has not been seen or offered publicly since 1945 (as far as this cataloger knows). It is unknown what how this specimen would grade today. It is important to note that many of the early Silver Dollar lots in WGC were misattributed, understandable as the Bolender book had not been published yet, and the Haseltine Type Table Catalog had no plates. The 1798 B-13, BB-108 shares an obverse die with the rare 1798 B-10, BB-109 and is often misattributed as B-10. The rare 1798 B-10, BB-109 shares an obverse die with the relatively common 1798 B-13, BB-108 and is often misattributed as B-13. An example is the 1976 ANA Convention Sale AU55 piece, listed in the Bowers book under "Notable Specimens" on page 295. That coin is misattributed and it is actually from the B-13 die marriage, not B-10. The next highest grade examples of this die marriage that are known to this cataloger are two specimens that grade AU50.
The 1798 B-10, BB-109 obverse always comes weakly struck in the central areas. The obverse can be identified by the die break from the lower right of the L in LIBERTY that stretches upward toward the rim. There is also a diagnostic die flaw between star 13 and the bust of Liberty. On this specimen, as is on most, a die break starts at the denticles beneath the 17 of the date and continues upward through the first 5 stars on the left. This die marriage was underrated by Bolender, and remains underrated today, especially in Mint State.
From the Michael Hering Collection. (NGC ID# 24X6, PCGS# 6873)
