Description:
1891-O Seated Quarter Rarity, A Condition Census MS64 NGC Representative
1891-O 25C MS64 NGC. Briggs 2-B. The 1891-O is somewhat of an anomaly among Seated Quarters. It is the only O-mint issue in this series with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST on the reverse above the eagle. The '91-O is also the first U.S. Quarter produced at the New Orleans Mint since the facility was seized by Confederate forces at the end of February 1861. A paltry total of 68,000 business strike 1891-O Seated Quarters were produced, survivors of which are elusive in all grades. In the 1991 book The Comprehensive Encyclopedia of United States Liberty Seated Quarters, Larry Briggs assigns this issue a High R.6 rating in Mint State. Only eight Uncirculated examples are known to NGC and PCGS (7/02), and we have handled just two of these coins:

1. Ex: January 1999 FUN Signature Sale, lot 6622. An MS64 NGC example, although distinct from the present example.

2. Ex: 1997 New York ANA Signature Sale, lot 6248; 1999 Chicago ANA Signature Sale--The Ronald W. Brown Acadiana Collection, lot 6925; February 2000 Long Beach Signature Sale, lot 6333. Certified MS65 by PCGS.

Housed in a current NGC holder, this coin appears to be a newcomer to the Condition Census. The otherwise gunmetal-gray toning yields to splashes of cobalt-blue and tan colors here and there. The underlying surfaces reveal modest hints of brightness in the fields that are suggestive of a semi-prooflike finish. Sharply struck, and free of outwardly distracting abrasions. (NGC ID# 23VS, PCGS# 5525)
