Description:
Extremely Rare Mint State 1862 Eagle
1862 $10 MS60 NGC. The vast majority of survivors from this Civil War-era issue, with an original mintage of only 10,995 pieces, were either hoarded, melted or exported, and as a result most survivors, when seen, are apt to be well worn VF or XF representatives. Mint State survivors are almost unobtainable, with only three such pieces certified by NGC (this coin, another graded MS60, and a solitary MS63) and none to date by PCGS (4/03). This example displays the mild scuffiness that one would expect at this grade level, with a number of abrasions on each side, a short pinscratch in the lower-left obverse field, and a small rim bump at 2 o'clock on the obverse. On the plus side, it has highly reflective fields that enhance the bright golden luster, it is sharply struck, and most importantly is strictly free of any traces of wear that would lower it to the AU level. This is the finest certified 1862 Eagle that we have handled in recent memory, and is likely to be a fleeting opportunity for the astute specialist who recognizes the importance of this rarity in Mint State grade. Population: 2 in 60, 1 finer (4/03). (NGC ID# 2649, PCGS# 8635)
