Description:
Bright AU50 B-1 1796 Quarter
1796 25C AU50 PCGS. B-1, R.6. The B-1 variety is characterized by the (slightly) lower 6 in the date, and it is the scarcer of the two varieties of this year. The dies were engraved by Robert Scot and John Smith Gardner, based upon designs by Gilbert Stuart and John Eckstein. This piece was most likely a part of the Colonel Green Hoard of some 200 high grade 1796 quarters. However, most of the high grade '96 quarters that exist today are from this hoard, and almost all are of the High 6 (B-2) variety. While not completely brilliant, there is just the faintest hint of golden toning on the upper periphery. Like a great many high grade 1796 quarters that are known, this piece has bright, semi-reflective fields on each side. Sharply struck, especially on the obverse, the only weakness seen on this piece is in the center of the eagle's breast (a result actually of wear) and on the eagle's head, as always. A few shallow adjustment marks are seen in the center and upper portion of the reverse, otherwise the surfaces show only the slightest handling marks. (NGC ID# 23RA, PCGS# 5310)
