Description:
Extremely Rare 1964 SMS Lincoln Cent, MS67 Red PCGS
1964 1C SMS MS67 Red PCGS. Ten years ago Stack's offered the first 1964 SMS coins at public auction. Since that time very few others have appeared for sale. No documentation exists to prove what these coins are or how many were produced. However, examination of the surfaces show that this can only be a SMS coin as it is certainly better produced than any regular 1964 business strike, and yet it lacks the brilliant finish of an actual proof from that year. The conclusion is inevitable: this is an experimental striking of the SMS finish used from 1965 through 1967. Lange estimates that somewhere between 15 and 25 such pieces are known today, and he speculates that they were struck in either the Summer or Fall of 1965. The obverse of this piece shows just the faintest trace of reflectivity, which was produced by the light die striations in the fields. The reverse shows no reflectiveness, but it is obvious that special care was taken in the production of this coin. The surfaces show smooth, even red color and there are no contact marks that one could discern with the unaided eye. An extremely rare coin. Population: 5 in 67, 2 finer (7/03). (PCGS# 3284)
