Description:
Condition Census Bechtler Gold Dollar, MS63 PCGS
(1831-34) G$1 C.Bechtler Dollar, 30G. MS63 PCGS. Kagin-1, Breen 7745, R.4. Struck by Christoph Bechtler circa 1831-34 and historically significant as the first Gold Dollar produced in the United States. Struck before the tenor of Federal gold coins was reduced in 1834, these pieces weigh approximately 29.8 grains instead of the 27.6 grains of subsequent Bechtler issues. The obverse is noticeably buckled on many pieces, but on this well preserved coin, the surfaces are smooth and the detail is not affected. This Select Uncirculated example has a pronounced amount of light, green-gold color and very clean surfaces. The E in RUTHERF is boldly repunched. A bright and moderately prooflike example and one of the more available of the Christoph Bechtler issues, but conditionally rare in this high grade. Most seen are well worn with Very Fine to AU being the conditions most often seen. Struck from widely rotated dies. Combined PCGS and NGC population: 3 in 63, none finer at either service (12/04).(#10064) (PCGS# 10064)
