Description:
High Grade 1799 B-4, BB-153 Irregular Date Variety
1799 $1 Irregular Date, 15 Stars. B-4, BB-153, R.3. AU58 NGC. Irregular date, first 9 high, leans left; 15 Stars. Reiver die state a. Bowers-Borckardt die state I. The obverse is reflective and a bit mottled gray in color, with similar color and clean surfaces on the reverse. Free of adjustment marks or rim nicks. We do note several die cracks through most of the peripheral devices, date and into the fields on the obverse, while the reverse die is an early state. The fact that the reverse die is unbroken and does not show clash marks proves that this variety was struck prior to the overdate B-3, BB-141 issue. The centers are a touch weak on Liberty's hair and on the shield. One of the scarcer varieties for the year, and popular for the irregular placement of the 9s in the date.
Described in the Superior catalog as "Extremely Fine 40, however, weakly struck in the center portions. Light irregular toning with some prooflike surfaces. Rare variety in this grade."
Ex: Superior (February, 1977) lot 477. Envelope Included.(Registry values: P1) (PCGS# 6879)
