Description:
Rare 1779 Rhode Island Token with Wreath Below Ship
1778-1779 TOKEN Rhode Island Ship Token, Wreath Below, Copper MS62 Brown NGC. Breen-1141. Medium brown to tan in color with a very sharp strike on the ship, including each of the cannon ports. The surfaces are granular and show fine pitting over the fields and devices. There is a small raised area on the planchet left of the ship and there is an edge irregularity above FLAG on the obverse. An historic issue that apparently pokes fun at Lord Howe. A battle took place on a small island which changed sides a couple of times as ships came and went, unloading more soldiers and striking fear into the Revolutionary War soldiers. When the American's returned to retake the Island, Lord Howe's men took to their ships and sailed away to fight another day. This is the only example of this coin graded by NGC, and PCGS has seen 3 this high, but none finer. (PCGS# 576)
