Description:
Pleasing 1860-O Gem Dollar
1860-O $1 MS65 NGC. While 1860-O dollars were probably intended primarily for the export trade, several tens of thousands were held domestically. This, along with the release of several thousand pieces by the Treasury during the 1962-1964 distribution, has resulted, in what David Bowers (1993) calls : "...the most plentiful Liberty Seated dollar in Mint State...." Most Uncirculated specimens are in the MS60 to MS63 levels, in which several hundred pieces have been certified. However, only about 60 near-Gems and better examples have been graded.
The present MS65 '60-O displays smoky-gray patina with subtle sky-blue and gold undertones. Nicely preserved surfaces exude soft luster and sharply impressed design features, though the centers of the stars along the right border are soft. A rather pleasing specimen that is devoid of the serious bagmarks that are often seen on large, heavy dollars such as this. Census: 9 in 65, 4 finer (3/06).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 24Z3, PCGS# 6950)
