Description:
Popular 1799 B-23 Variety, 8x5 Obverse Stars
1799 $1 8x5 Stars VF30 NGC. B-23, BB-159, R.4. Die State II. Reiver Die State a. This is an important type or Guide Book variety with an unusual obverse star arrangement. It is the only Draped Bust silver dollar with eight stars left and just five right, similar to certain early gold pieces. The obverse has a crack through B of LIBERTY and another from the border to star 10 (mislabeled star 9 in the Bowers Encyclopedia. Intermingled blue-gray, gold, and iridescent toning on each side. Myriad abrasions and faint hairlines with a rim bruise at star 4 on the obverse and another over T of UNITED on the reverse. Although a few Mint State pieces are known, this example is typical of most survivors. Although this is not a rarity in terms of the variety, enough additional demand is created by the Guide Book listing that this die marriage is highly popular and seldom available.
Ex: Harry Laibstain (8/2005).
