Description

1864 Bronze Cent, PR65 Brown
Very Rare L on Ribbon Variety, Snow-PR2
Beautifully Toned

1864 1C L On Ribbon PR65 Brown PCGS. CAC. Snow-PR2. The actual Proof mintage of the 1864, with L Indian Head cent is unknown. For many years, the number was estimated to be 20 or slightly more. A roster of 18 pieces appears in The Flying Eagle & Indian Cent Attribution Guide, 2nd Edition, Volume 2, 1859-1869, by Richard E. Snow, published by "The Fly-In Club" in 2003. Several additional pieces have been identified in the intervening decade. PCGS has graded a total of 6 Proofs, including Brown, Red, and Deep Cameo examples. According to NGC's Census, they have handled 16. However, resubmissions may account for a few of those coins. Regardless of the quantity, this is the rarest date in the Proof Indian Head cent series by far.

This Snow-PR2 example exhibits the long raised diagonal die line on the obverse running through the neck and just under the jaw that serves as a diagnostic. Additionally, the date appears far to the right of the bust point.

Rich colorful toning provides this Gem with exceptional visual appeal. Intermingled, primarily pastel, shades of blue, green, violet, orange, red, and yellow are present. The reverse displays bold orange-copper color overall, with areas of toning also appearing. Strong luster and a sharp strike further add to the attractiveness. A few tiny as-made strike-throughs are observed on the obverse.

This Gem stands alone at the PR65 grade in Brown at both PCGS and NGC, with only two finer Brown examples, both MS66, one at each service (11/13).(Registry values: N7079)
