Description:
Gem Proof 1836 Half Cent
B-1 Original, Large Berries
1836 1/2 C PR65 Brown NGC. B-1 Original, Large Berries, Low R.6. Only proof half cents were struck in 1836, and restrikes of this issue were produced in later years. The same pair of dies were used for both original and first restrike half cents of this date, making it difficult to tell them apart. In his Half Cent Encyclopedia, Walter Breen stated: "These are often confused with the First Restrikes below [in his reference]; the quickest way to tell them apart is that on the Originals, the borders are in every way similar to those on proofs of 1832-35, whereas on the Restrikes the obverse die shows buckling and the borders are much more pronounced, 'squared,' with knife rims."
Close examination by several Heritage catalogers confirms that this attractive Gem is indeed an original. Whispers of light blue occur on the light brown surfaces of the obverse, whereas aqua-blue and crimson dominate the reverse. A well executed strike sharpens the design features, and the few minute contacts on the obverse are not worthy of individual mention. A faint fingerprint is noted on the left obverse. Census: 1 in 65 Brown, 1 finer (2/08). EAC PR60+.(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 223B, PCGS# 1207)
