Description:
Conditionally Rare 1903 Jefferson Gold Dollar
PR67 Ultra Cameo
1903 G$1 Jefferson PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC. The Louisiana Purchase Exposition of 1904, popularly known as the St. Louis World's Fair, must have been an immense undertaking. The Exposition was ostensibly held to celebrate the one-hundredth anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase of 1803, but was delayed for a year.
The 1,272 acre site was located on the present-day grounds of Forest Park, in St. Louis. There were 15 major exhibit buildings, and hundreds of smaller structures, connected by approximately 75 miles of roads and walkways. The Palace of Agriculture alone covered 20 acres. Exhibits were staged by 62 foreign nations, the U.S. government, and 43 of the then-45 States of the Union. There were also carnival-type amusements. The Exposition reportedly drew some twenty million visitors, between April 30 and December 1 of 1904.
Commemorative gold dollars were struck in order to help finance this gigantic undertaking, and two different types were eventually produced: one featuring an obverse portrait of Thomas Jefferson (President in 1803), the other featuring a portrait of the recently-assassinated President William McKinley. One hundred proof specimens of each variety were struck, and distributed to favored individuals and officials, rather than being offered for sale to collectors.
The present Superb Gem example is one of only two coins to be graded as PR67 Ultra Cameo by NGC, with none finer at either of the major services (5/08). Fully struck with undeniably deep mirror fields, and virtually pristine surfaces, this magical specimen should appeal to even the most advanced collector of commemorative proof gold. (#97482)
