Description:
Pleasing Near-Mint 1865 Three Dollar
1865 $3 AU58 NGC. Unlike a number of other odd denominations in U.S. coinage history, the three dollar gold piece lingered for decades, with token business strike mintages punctuated by occasional spurts of comparatively high mintages. With its business strike mintage of just 1,140 pieces, the 1865 ranks as one of the more important three dollar gold issues, though it is underappreciated outside the narrow circle of series enthusiasts.
This vivid orange-gold piece shows a degree of reflectivity in the still-lustrous fields. The strike is solid, and only a trace of friction affects the high points. Minimally marked overall with only a few wispy abrasions present in the fields. Census: 17 in 58, 22 finer (5/08).
