Description:
Beautiful MS66 1810 Half Dollar, O-106a
1810 50C MS66 NGC. Ex: Eliasberg. O-106a, R.3. Cream-gray, russet, and sea-green endow this lustrous and remarkably unabraded Premium Gem. Sharply struck aside from stars 4 and 7 and opposite at the wing tip and leaves near the rim.
The present die marriage is readily identified by a lengthy diagonal die line from the right shield corner. The reverse field near the scroll exhibits several sets of deep clash marks, but no clash marks are apparent on the obverse. O-106a is the "die state" with localized peripheral softness of strike. Parsley's standard reference suggests that "edge lettering machinery" "lodged in the die" to cause a shifting area of "flattening on the rim."
The edge is obscured by the holder, but in its April 1997 Eliasberg catalog appearance, the present piece was described as having an edge lettering error. DOLLAR and FIFTY overlap, creating DOILFLTAY. Census: 2 in 66, 0 finer (5/08).
Ex: George H. Earle Collection; Henry Chapman, 6/1912; John H. Clapp; Clapp Estate; Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 4/1997), lot 1711.(Registry values: N1) (#6095)
