Description:
Key Date 1853 Round Half Dollar, BG-435, MS62
1853 50C Arms of California 50 Cents, BG-435, Low R.5, MS62 PCGS. This date has always been one of the most sought-after in the popular California fractional gold series. The distinctive obverse is modeled after the state arms, with a seated Minerva holding a shield and spear. A bear appears at her feet, and mountains loom in the background. The reverse features an eagle with shield, scroll and olive branch, reminiscent of the contemporary Humbert fifty dollar slugs. Neither die appears on any other issue, making this a key date for the type collector, as well as the specialist. The maker of this unique design type is unknown. This specimen is sharply struck, with fine detail in all the design elements. Lustrous, yellow-gold surfaces make this example especially attractive.
From The Hamous Collection of California Gold.
