Description:
Impressive 1916-D Dime, MS65 Full Bands
1916-D 10C MS65 Full Bands NGC. The relative availability of 1916-D quarters is directly related to the unavailability and low mintage of 1916-D dimes. The entire mintage of 264,000 dimes was produced in November. At a meeting of mint superintendents and the director at the end of November, it was decided that the striking of all other denominations should be suspended at the Denver Mint until the Treasury Department's order for 4 million quarters could be satisfied. This placed considerable pressure on the 10-year-old Denver Mint, and as a result, by the time Treasury's order could be fulfilled, the calendar year was over and it was time to move on to coins dated 1917.
Knowledgeable collectors are aware that the 1916-D dime is not rare in the absolute sense. However, like the 1909-S VDB cent, its low mintage and perception of rarity are far more important than an actual lack of coins in the marketplace--those two factors being the primary motivators that have consistently increased the price of the 1916-D dime in all grades over the past 70 years. In Gem condition and with full central cross bands on the reverse, though, the 1916-D is an important condition scarcity, and there are never enough coins available to satisfy collector demand.
This is an all-brilliant coin that displays the usual granular, mattelike texture with an overlay of satiny mint luster. There are no singularly mentionable abrasions on either side of this lovely piece, and the cross bands are deeply split and rounded on the reverse, as are the diagonals. Only 23 pieces have been so graded by NGC, with another 32 certified by PCGS (8/08), and only 31 coins are known in higher grades. This is an impressive and lustrous example of this important 20th century key.(Registry values: N7079) (#4907)
