Description:
Outstanding 1918/7-S Quarter, MS62
1918/7-S 25C MS62 PCGS. The 1918/7-S overdate is the only Standing Liberty quarter that successfully competes with the first-year 1916 issue in terms of desirability and rarity. Most references state that this variety was unknown to collectors until 1937. Walter Breen (1988) notes that many rolls of quarters were retrieved from cash reserves of failed banks during the 1930s. Perhaps the two events are linked, with collector scrutiny at the time bringing to light this previously unpublicized variety? In any case, this coin is a beautiful Mint State example of a highly desirable type with an unknown mintage. The downstroke of the 7 is clearly visible through the bottom loop of the 8 in the date. Though the strike is somewhat soft in the usual reverse and obverse locations, this is an amazingly clean coin with no abrasions or spots of concern. The surfaces shows abundant luster, overall bright silver-gray patina with a hint of bronze, and darker toning highlights near the rims. Population: 12 in 62, 42 finer (8/08). (Registry values: N4719) (#5726)
