Description:
Lovely, Toned PR64 1839 Gobrecht Dollar
Judd-104, Die Alignment IV
1839 P$1 Name Omitted, Judd-104 Restrike, Pollock-116, R.3, PR64 NGC. Silver. Die Alignment IV (Center of Liberty's head opposite the right side of F in OF). Restrikes are known in both Die Alignment III and IV, and both show faint die cracks through the tops of MERI, TE, and on later strikings cracks connect LAR. Two hub changes were made to the 1839 dollars. One was the addition of feathers along the eagle's neck, the other was the effacement of Gobrecht's name from the base of the rock. The effacement was incompletely done for the 1839 dollars with shadowy remnants still in evidence. When the 1838 dollars were struck (after the 1839 coins!) the job was much more thoroughly done.
Gobrecht dollars have always been highly prized by collectors, which accounts for the various striking periods of restrikes. In the Fewsmith Sale of 1870, an 1839 brought $29. Curiously, in that same sale a Name Below Base only realized $10.50, while the 1838 was the most expensive Gobrecht at $45.
This is a lovely 1839 dollar. The fields are deeply reflective, suggestive of a later striking period, and each side is covered with spectacular toning. The obverse displays reddish-golden toning of varying intensity. The reverse has just a bit of that color on the left part of that side, the remainder is a mixture of thalo blue and violet. Still, the fields are deeply mirrored enough to forcefully flash through the layers of color. There are no noticeable or mentionable contact marks on either side of this near-Gem 1839. A coin worthy of consideration for a high-grade 19th century type set or set of Gobrecht dollars. (#11446)
