Description:
Remarkable 1878-S Trade Dollar, MS65
1878-S T$1 MS65 PCGS. The year 1878 marked both a beginning and an end in U.S. coinage history. Congress passed the Bland-Allison Act on February 28, 1878, which was a boon to silver mining interests. Bland-Allison required the Treasury to purchase millions of ounces of silver bullion, and the end result was obvious: there would be a new circulating silver coin, George T. Morgan's dollar. Buffeted by changing market and political winds, the Trade dollar became the orphan no one wanted, and the last circulation issues were minted in 1878. Over 4.1 million coins were produced at San Francisco that year, and though many were likely melted, the 1878-S Trade dollar is a common issue in lower grades. However, it is rare in Gem or finer grades.
This coin is a wonderful example of the last year of Trade dollar production. Light strokes of pastel cinnamon and rose are brushed over a taupe underlay, both yielding to untoned centers. The strike is sharp, and radiant luster complements the moderate patina. This is an uncommonly preserved representative of a unique chapter in the history of U.S. coinage. Population: 18 in 65, 18 finer (8/08).(Registry values: N4719) (#7048)
