Description:

Condition Rarity 1895-O Select Dollar

1895-O $1 MS63 ANACS. While the 1893-S issue is arguably the most important and widely recognized of all business strike Morgan silver dollars, the 1895-O follows closely behind. Similarly rare dates include 1884-S, 1892-S, and 1901. All of these dates have a similar theme, that of relative availability in circulated grades, but not in Mint State. These dates had varying mintages from 100,000 coins for the 1893-S to nearly 7 million examples of the 1901 dollar. The 1895-O Morgan dollar had a mintage of 450,000 coins, and it seems that most of those pieces entered circulation. There were no hoards of any substance, and none were found in the Treasury vaults when Morgan dollars were released some 40 years ago (David Bowers, Silver Dollars and Trade dollars of the United States, 2006, p. 241).
This particular example has generally sharp design elements with slight weakness over Liberty's ear and on the eagle's breast. Both sides are fully lustrous with frosty silver surfaces. There is no evidence of toning on the brilliant white obverse and reverse. A few minor field marks are visible on each side, as well as a few other tiny blemishes on the devices. It is important to realize that this is at once an important date and also a rarity in all Mint State grades. Since the beginning of our auction record keeping in 1993, we have only handled 12 examples at this grade level and 15 finer coins. Given the extraordinary population of Morgan dollars in all grades as a type, these population figures for the 1895-O are exceptionally important.(Registry values: P9, N7079) (#7236)
