Description:

Popular 1854 Type Two Gold Dollar, MS63

1854 G$1 Type Two MS63 PCGS. In mid-1854, the Mint attempted to rectify problems caused by the small size of the Type One gold dollar. The planchet diameter was increased by 2 mm, and the thickness was reduced accordingly to maintain weight and fineness standards. Chief Engraver James Longacre also introduced an elegant new design, featuring the head of an Indian princess on the obverse. Unfortunately, the highest points of this design were directly opposite the high relief of the reverse design. Coupled with the thinner planchet, the juxtaposition of the designs led to striking difficulties that were never resolved. Most 1854 Type Two dollars show softness in the details of the hair on the obverse and corresponding weakness in LL of DOLLAR and 85 of the date on the reverse. The issue is often seen with clash marks. The coins wore down easily in commerce, and the design was discontinued after only three years. The average grade seen is AU55.
The present coin displays unbroken, but slightly subdued luster, set off by lovely orange-gold color. The strike is typical for the date. The fields are unblemished except for a few clash marks, mostly on the reverse. The short life of this design type makes this date attractive as a type coin, and the relatively high grade should appeal to the gold dollar specialist.
