Description:
Phenomenal 1906 Eagle, PR67 Cameo
Extremely Rare and Tied for the Finest Certified
1906 $10 PR67 Cameo NGC. In 1906, the penultimate year of the Liberty Head ten dollar series, the Philadelphia Mint struck a meager 77 proofs. These pieces have a diagnostic die dot at the center of the right curve of the 9 in the date, although the proof nature of the present specimen is unmistakable. Additionally, Breen wrote in his Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins that most specimens are impaired, and even those examples seldom come to market. This specimen, however, is not only tied for the finest certified, but is also virtually flawless.
Estimates vary of the total number of survivors of proof 1906 eagles, and current research indicates that around half of the original number has survived. Previously, Akers (1980) wrote that between 25 and 30 pieces are known, and in 1988 Breen estimated 30 to 35 examples have survived. As with most proof gold issues, the population data is unreliable because of resubmissions. NGC and PCGS combined report a total of 68 submissions in all designations. Only three pieces certified by NGC are considered Ultra Cameo and 20 have been labeled Cameo. Just three grade PR67 Cameo, with none finer, and two of those (the present piece included) have received the coveted Star designation (8/08).
Powerful deeply mirrored fields on this spectacular coin show impressive contrast against the frosted devices. It is difficult to ascertain what keeps this piece from NGC's Ultra Cameo designation and it is hard to imagine a specimen with a greater cameo appearance. Bright yellow patina graces both sides, although the highly reflective fields seem nearly black under a lamp. Careful examination with a loupe reveals only a couple of inconsequential contact marks and virtually imperceptible toning spots. This fully struck piece exhibits outstanding eye appeal.
The Official Red Book of Auction Records, U.S. Gold Coinage, 2003-2007 indicates that there were 11 appearances of the proof 1906 eagle at auction during that five-year span, of which the two finest were graded PR65 Cameo by NGC. In our February 2003 Long Beach auction we had a PCGS PR66 Cameo specimen that was not sold. These records indicate the infrequency at which this issue appears at auction, and highlight the extreme rarity of a PR67 Cameo example. This magnificent coin deserves a place in one of the finest collections.(Registry values: P1) (#88846)
