Description:

Important Gem 1907 Wire Rim Saint-Gaudens Eagle

1907 $10 Wire Rim MS65 PCGS. CAC. Before the pendulum of official sentiment would swing completely against pattern collectors later in the 20th century, the Mint tradition of making patterns available to collectors enjoyed a brief revival, spurred by the enthusiasm of President Theodore Roosevelt for the coinage designs of Augustus Saint-Gaudens. George Roberts, in one of his last official correspondences as Director of the Mint, mentioned Roosevelt's involvement in the production and distribution of the experimental pieces that would later become known as the Wire Rim, Periods variety. As quoted in Roger W. Burdette's Renaissance of American Coinage 1905 - 1908:

"In connection with the new coinage I intend to also refer to the President's wish to have a number of coins struck from the high relief experimental dies. ... In considering the number authorized I would suggest that to strike only a few will be to give them a very high money value and very likely occasion criticism. ... It would be better, in my opinion, to strike several hundred and to at least allow the public collections of the country to obtain copies."

The traditional mintage figure of 500 pieces, however well-intentioned, is not nearly enough to keep up with today's demand for this beautiful issue, and Gems such as the present coin are particularly valuable and prized. The devices are pleasingly detailed and free of significant distractions, as are the satiny sun-yellow fields. The namesake wire rim is visible on each sides, though an arc above Liberty's head is the most prominent. Population: 45 in 65, 19 finer (7/08).(Registry values: N7079) (#8850)
