Description:
Splendid 1907 High Relief, Wire Rim, MS64
1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS64 NGC. Two varieties were created at the time the High Relief Saint-Gaudens double eagles were coined. Known as the Wire Rim and Flat Rim, they actually reflect minor changes in Mint apparatus, rather than actual varieties or even die states.
The first 8,000 or so coins struck all had a wire rim, called a fin within the Mint, that was considered less desirable. The fin was a result of metal squeezed between the edge of the die and the collar. The Flat Rim variety was the result of corrections to the combination of milling and planchet diameter. Approximately 4,000 of the Flat Rim coins were minted. Known almost immediately after the coins first appeared, the debate surrounding the Flat Rim and Wire Rim coins continues to this day.
Dave Bowers writes: "In my opinion the wire rim does not constitute a distinctive variety worth collecting. For some reason, these are listed separately in the Guide Book of United States Coins, and thus a modest demand has arisen for them."
This piece is highly lustrous with frosty light yellow-gold surfaces and excellent design definition. A few faint surface marks are present, but the overall eye appeal is extraordinary. The wire rim is most evident around the obverse, with some slight evidence on the reverse. An exceptional near-Gem, this piece should see strong bidder interest at the sale.
