Description:

Gem 1907 High Relief, Wire Rim Twenty

1907 $20 High Relief, Wire Rim MS65 PCGS. CAC. While opinions of the artistry exhibited by the Saint-Gaudens coinage designs are nearly uniformly high today, it is important to remember that initial reactions were more mixed, particularly among those who valued practicality and uniformity over aesthetics. While the eagle came in for more extensive criticism, even the now-venerated High Relief double eagle suffered its share of indignities. In his Renaissance of American Coinage 1905 - 1908, Roger W. Burdette quotes one Talcott Williams, writing for the February 1908 edition of what he termed "a publication of art and design," The International Studio:

"To those trained by earlier models, the designs of Saint-Gaudens are the only ones in our day above the mere draughtsman's level. Little more depressing has occurred in our day than the baiting these coins have had from newspaper and sciolist. No application of art to familiar objects is possible where men are wedded to their preconceptions and are ignorant of the succession of art."

Today, the High Relief double eagles are virtually irresistible to collectors, especially when they are so well-preserved as this charming Gem. With no significant distractions on either side, one is free to appreciate the sculptural qualities of the beautifully detailed central devices. A prominent wire rim around the obverse further reinforces the bold strike. While the lustrous reverse is generally yellow-gold, subtle peach and orange elements grace the smooth fields to either side of Liberty. PCGS has certified 83 finer examples (8/08).(Registry values: N7079) (#9135)

Due completely to Heritage's thoroughly diligent and professional management and promotion of the collection, the faraday Collection stirred national attention among numismatists and the auction results brought a gross value greater than that last estimated by the experienced collector.
