Description:
Vibrant Gem 1922-S Twenty
1922-S $20 MS65 NGC. After a three-year hiatus in double eagle production from 1917 to 1919, mintages resumed with two years of tentative striking in 1920 and 1921, and not until 1922 did official mintages return to the millions, as it did in San Francisco. While the 1922 Philadelphia issue, with its mintage of under 1.4 million pieces, is available in most grades thanks to extensive repatriation, the 1922-S double eagle was not so fortunate, and as Garrett and Guth described it, the issue " ... suffered tremendously from the massive meltings of gold coins in the 1930s."
In this sense, the 1922-S has more in common with the substantially rarer issues struck in 1920 and 1921 than its Philadelphia contemporary. Garrett and Guth continue by noting the existing combined certified population of under 2,000 pieces, a tiny figure that surely includes resubmissions, and they point out that " ... most of those are in lower Mint State grades or circulated." They laud Gem and better survivors, which now show a combined certified population of just 21 examples of the former and a mere five pieces in the latter category (8/08).
The present survivor's luster is stronger than the norm, though it also shows an undercurrent of the more typical satin. Striking quality is excellent, and the generally yellow-gold surfaces show hints of green-gold and sun. All things considered, this is a delightful example of an already challenging issue, made even more desirable by its conditionally rare state, and a coin that virtually any collector of the series would be proud to own.(Registry values: N7079) (#9174)
