Description:
Lustrous and Colorful MS64 1929 Twenty
1929 $20 MS64 PCGS. CAC. Widely recognized as the first of the key issues at the end of the Saint-Gaudens series of twenties, a series that includes such fabled rarities as the 1930-S, 1931, 1931-D, and 1932. The scarcity of this date was commented upon by Paul Green in the October 24, 2006 issue of Numismatic News:

"While not at the top of the list in terms of dates destroyed, the large mintage of the 1929 suggests that in terms of actual numbers it might well have been one of the dates most heavily destroyed. Our supply today appears to be in large part thanks to examples found in European banks. While the 1929 is expensive, the situation could have actually been much worse."

The MS64 level represents the greatest availability for the 1929 as well as the best value. With 161 submission events representing approximately 120-130 individual coins at this grade level, an MS64 is only 20-30% more than an MS63 coin.
The CAC sticker on this coin is a meaningful expression of the upper end appearance of this piece. This is, to a great extent because the surfaces are untampered as one can tell from the rich reddish-gold and lilac color on each side. The softly frosted mint luster gives the piece a pleasing glow and the coloration adds even more to the appeal of this rarity. Sharply defined throughout with no meaningful or mentionable abrasions, just the few tiny marks one would expect from a near-Gem coin. (Registry values: N7079) (#9190)

Revised Edition by James L. Halperin, Mark R. Borckardt, Mark Van Winkle, Jon Amato, and Gregory J. Rohan, with special contributor David W. Akers

The Coinage of Augustus Saint-Gaudens is an issue-by-issue examination of these two artistically inspired series of gold coins. Each date and mintmark is reviewed with up-to-date information, much of which has never been previously published. The book is based on two extraordinary collections: The Phillip H. Morse collection and the Dr. and Mrs. Steven L. Duckor collection.
