Description:
PCGS 1803 MS 62. Large Reverse Stars, Extra Star in Cloud. B. 1-E. A rare variety that has a most unusual feature. On the cloud on the extreme right, below the letter F, there is a small star that was impressed in the die, lying entirely within the borders of the cloud itself. We cannot think of another variety in any series where this happened in exactly this manner. The only similar occurrence was on the 1799 B-3 dollar that has two stars partially buried beneath the clouds. As such it is quite rare and remained unknown until Harry Bass discovered this feature in 1966.
The strike on the coin is exceptionally bold with only faint softness showing on the breast feathers of the eagle immediately above the shield. There are a few very faint adjustment marks on the obverse, but these do little to affect the overall appeal of the coin, and there are only a few scattered marks elsewhere on the piece. Overall one notices a muted greenish-gold color that is accented with a faint blush of reddish-coppery tone around the rims. A very attractive early ten and surely one of the finest examples of this rare variety known. Population: 11 in 62, 3 finer. (NGC ID# 2628, PCGS# 8565)
