Description:
Popular 1859 Judd-228 Transitional Cent, MS65
1859 P1C Indian Cent, Judd-228, Pollock-272, R.1, MS65 NGC.
Design.
Regular 1859-dated obverse cent dies were mated with a reverse die, or dies, featuring a design that was eventually adopted to strike all official Indian cents from 1860 through 1909. An oak wreath--with a narrow shield between the two upper tips--encloses ONE CENT. Struck in copper-nickel with a plain edge.

Commentary.
This transitional piece is popular due to its relatively low price in relation to its availability. For example, many more 1856 Flying Eagle cents are extant than Judd-228, yet the latter often sells for a fraction of the cost. The absence of this issue in leading hobby price guides explains the price-to-availability phenomenon. United States Pattern Coins by Judd indicates that most survivors are in business strike format, and that the proof variants "are valued at four times their Mint State counterparts."

Physical Description.
A business strike dominated by red coloration on both sides. The strike is bold. Two small carbon spots on the reverse--one at the 10 o'clock reverse rim and another on the diagonal of N in ONE--shall serve as pedigree identifiers for future collectors and researchers. NGC Census: 37 in MS65, 6 finer. PCGS Population: 59 in MS65, 10 finer. (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Stack's private treaty transaction.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
