Description:
Captivating 1864 With Motto
Quarter, Judd-386, PR64
1864 25C Quarter Dollar, Judd-386, Pollock-454, Low R.7, PR64 NGC.
Design.
The obverse is a regular die trial striking, while the reverse has the motto IN GOD WE TRUST above the eagle as adopted in 1866. Struck in silver with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
Judd-386, along with the similar half dollar (Judd-391) and silver dollar (Judd-396), is a so-called "transitional pattern" that, in terms of its nominal date, at least, bridges the gap between the No Motto and With Motto pieces--except it is actually a restrike that was produced several years later. About a dozen of these pieces are known in silver, along with others in copper and aluminum, and even a single piece in nickel.

Physical Description.
A gorgeous Choice proof with light golden toning on both sides that masks the deeply mirrored fields. The devices are lustrous and boldly defined. Minor friction on the high points of the obverse is evident, from improper use of a standard coin album. NGC Census: 2 in PR64, 3 finer. PCGS Population: 3 in PR64, 3 finer (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Stack's private treaty (12/1987).
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (PCGS# 60557)
