Description:
Attractively Toned 1869 Standard
Silver Dime Pattern, PR65
Judd-697, High R.6
1869 10C Standard Silver Ten Cents, Judd-697, Pollock-776, High R.6, PR65 NGC.
Design.
Right-facing Liberty wearing Phrygian cap decorated with three stars. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA borders the upper periphery of the obverse, with IN GOD WE TRUST in curved ribbon below. Reverse: STANDARD SILVER around upper edge with 10 CENTS inside an oak and laurel wreath. The edge is plain on this silver issue.

Commentary.
The Judd-696 through Judd-701 dime patterns mark the beginning of the popular Standard Silver issues of 1869 and 1870. The purpose of the proposed Standard Silver coinage was to facilitate the redemption of fractional currency in a manner that would put specie into circulation without the risk of hoarding or exportation due to the intrinsic value of the replacement coinage. To accomplish this goal, the suggested weight of Standard Silver issues was to be less than contemporary circulating silver coinage.

Physical Description.
Variegated rose and cobalt-blue toning frames reflective fields on both sides of this high grade pattern. The strike is respectable, and there are no flaws or distractions worthy of mention. NGC Census: 2 in PR65, 1 finer. PCGS Population: 2 in PR65, 2 finer (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: ANA Midwinter Auction (Heritage, 2/1987), lot 1308.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
