Description:
Well-Preserved 1869 Copper Quarter Pattern
PR66 Red and Brown
Judd-735, Low R.7
1869 25C Standard Silver Quarter Dollar, Judd-735, Pollock-816, Low R.7, PR66 Red and Brown NGC.
Design.
On the obverse a right-facing Liberty wears a headband displaying LIBERTY in raised letters and a single star at the front. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA borders the upper rim, with IN GOD WE TRUST in a curved ribbon below. On the reverse STANDARD SILVER is around the upper edge with 25 / CENTS in an open oak and laurel wreath. The date, 1869, is at the lower margin. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
Of the three different metals used to strike the many Standard Silver patterns of 1869 and 1870, the silver and aluminum pieces are typically well preserved. Copper examples, on the other hand, can present a challenge for those in search of problem-free specimens. Per the ninth edition of United States Pattern Coins by Judd: "The copper coins in particular are difficult to find in choice preservation as many have been polished or retoned, or are spotted."

Physical Description.
The current offering has survived in a splendid state of preservation. Mostly red coloration accounts for the Red and Brown designation by NGC and the pleasing surfaces--free of distractions--justify the Premium Gem grade. Pollock (1994) describes this piece in his United States Patterns and Related Issues: "86.8 grains, diameter: 0.899 inches, die alignment: about 170 degrees." NGC Census: 1 in PR66 Red and Brown, none finer in Red and Brown, with 1 PR63 Red and 1 PR64 Red Deep Cameo. PCGS Population: None in PR66 Red and Brown, none finer in Red and Brown, with the highest two graded PCGS pieces being a PR63 Red and Brown and a PR64 Red (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Stack's private treaty transaction.
