Description:
Plain Edge 1869 Standard Silver Half, PR64
Judd-749, High R.6
1869 50C Standard Silver Half Dollar, Judd-749, Pollock-832, High R.6, PR64 NGC.
Design.
Liberty, wearing a plain tiara, faces right. A headband behind the tiara features LIBERTY in raised letters. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA dominates the upper periphery, with IN GOD WE TRUST in a ribbon below. On the reverse 50 / CENTS is within an oak and laurel wreath, with STANDARD SILVER at the upper rim and the date below. Two six-pointed stars in the lower field--one to the left and one to the right--complete the design. Struck in silver with a plain edge.

Commentary.
Nine-piece sets of Standard Silver patterns were offered to collectors at the cost of $15 per set. The fact that the Mint produced 54 different combinations of Standard Silver dimes, quarters, and halves dated 1869 sheds light on the intended purpose of the patterns. Profit was clearly a motive, since the number of patterns produced, which were quite similar in design, was excessive. All of the Standard Silver issues are technically essays, or experimental patterns, since they represented a change in weight or size and composition, as opposed to a design revision only.

Physical Description.
Typical for the issue, this piece shows weakness on the central reverse design. The surfaces are reflective and free of mentionable distractions. Azure coloration dominates lilac undertones on both sides of this near-Gem proof specimen. A lovely representative of Judd-749, of which fewer than 12 survivors are believed extant in all grades. NGC Census: 1 in PR64, 3 finer. PCGS Population: 2 in PR64, 2 finer (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Auction '87 (Stack's, 7/1987), lot 834.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two. (PCGS# 60978)
