Description:
1869 With Motto Five Dollar in Copper
Judd-775, PR58 Burnished
1869 $5 Five Dollar, Judd-775, Pollock-861, High R.7--Burnished--NCS. Proof.
Design.
The dies are the regular-issue Liberty Head half eagle design of the year. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
While the Judd reference refers to these as regular die-trial pieces, USPatterns.com suggests they more than likely were produced for sale to collectors as part of complete off-metal sets. Other 1869-dated half eagle patterns listed in the Judd reference, such as Judd-778, employ the pre-1866 No Motto reverse. Such pieces are now believed to have been privately struck outside of the Mint, possibly by either famed 19th century collector Joseph J. Mickley or Early Coins of America author Sylvester S. Crosby.

Physical Description.
In-house graded as PR58 Burnished. There is no NCS color designation or grade on this copper piece, but the coin is extremely dark brown, with some areas of raw orange copper on the reverse.

Provenance.
Ex: Superior (1/1989), lot 3826.
