Description:
Fiery Red 1879 Washlady Quarter
Judd-1591, PR66 Red Cameo
1879 25C Washlady Quarter Dollar, Judd-1591, Pollock-1784, R.6-7, PR66 Red Cameo NGC.
Design.
The Washlady design is attributed to Charles Barber, with Liberty's hair bound behind the head. The obverse has UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border with the date below the bust. The reverse has an eagle clutching an olive branch and three arrows. The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA legend and E PLURIBUS UNUM motto follow inside the upper reverse border with the denomination expressed as QUAR. DOLLAR below. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.

Commentary.
The most recent Judd reference considers this pattern variety to be Low R.7, meaning a surviving population of 10 to 12 coins. At USPatterns.com, the survival estimate is between 12 and 15 coins. In January 2007, we offered a PR65 Red and Brown example of Judd-1591, the only other piece that we have offered since 1993.

Physical Description.
The central obverse and reverse of this stunning Premium Gem proof are a trifle weak, but all remaining details are bold. This exceptional piece is fully brilliant with light orange mint color. A single tiny spot near the 1 of the date is the only noticeable blemish, and should aid in tracing the provenance. NGC Census: 1 in PR66 Red Cameo, none finer. PCGS Population: The finest are two coins graded PR65 Red and Brown (12/08).

Provenance.
Ex: Stack's private treaty.
From The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection Part Two.
