Description:
1838 V-8 Half Dime, MS68
One of the Finest Known
1838 H10C Large Stars, No Drapery MS68 NGC. V-8. A stunning Superb Gem. As of (11/08), only two examples of this date have been certified at the seemingly unobtainable grade of MS68 at NGC, with one such piece at PCGS. The other NGC MS68 coin has crossed Heritage's auction block twice: the first time in our January 2007 FUN sale where it realized $23,000, and then again in our August 2008 Baltimore ANA sale, where the price paid increased dramatically to $37,375. In our previous descriptions of the other MS68 1838 half dime, we noted that it was the only one of the two thus graded to receive the coveted designation by NGC. The other MS68 coin--the piece offered here--was also awarded a , even though the latest NGC Census Report shows one with and one without the designation. This is simply an error.
Astonishingly, both Superb Gem specimens have similar appearances, being awash in a sea of electric-blue and amber iridescence. At first glance, they appear to be the same coin, but closer examination reveals that they are only cousins; the coin offered here is attributed as V-8, whereas the other is a V-11 variant. Considering their amazing state of preservation and incredibly similar toning pattern, one can only wonder if they both originated from the same vintage collection.
Well defined features, mark-free surfaces, and radiant luster define the technical grade, while a combination of the aforementioned qualities and the aesthetically pleasing coloration explains the notation on the NGC label. The attribution of this V-8 specimen is confirmed by the potion of star 1 to the rock on the obverse and a die crack from the reverse rim through the left side of M in AMERICA. Partial dentilation from 6 o'clock to 12 o'clock on the reverse is common to the issue. Census: 2 in 68 , 0 finer (11/08).(Registry values: N1) (NGC ID# 2TXX, PCGS# 4317)
