Description:
Flashy 1804 14 Star Reverse Quarter Eagle
AU58, Breen-6119, BD-2
1804 $2 1/2 14 Star Reverse AU58 NGC. Breen-6119, BD-2, R.4. This coin is easily recognized not only by the 14 stars on the reverse, but also because it is the only Robert Scot-designed quarter eagle "with an obvious cross pattern of stars," as John Dannreuther and Harry Bass, Jr. (2006) put it. The authors elaborate: "This reverse die was believed by Breen to be a leftover die from around 1798, as the pattern of stars around the eagle's head is in what is called the cross pattern. Virtually all of the later dies have an arc pattern. Whenever this reverse die was made, it was still in good shape and was used."
The partially prooflike fields of this near-Mint State example highlight the mildly frosty motifs at certain angles. Excellent definition is noted on the design features. A few minor circulation marks are visible on the obverse, including an unobtrusive hair-thin mark on Liberty. Adjustment marks are seen on the lower reverse. This piece yields considerable "flash."(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 25F8, PCGS# 7652)
