Description:

Frosty 1836 Quarter Eagle
McCloskey-D, MS64

1836 $2 1/2 Script 8 MS64 PCGS. CAC. McCloskey-D, Head of 1835, Breen-6143, R.2. From a later state of the dies as evinced by the fine die break extending from the rim, through star 6, across the L of LIBERTY, over Ms. Liberty's hair, and finally terminating in the field between the final two stars. It is all too often stated that the 1836 Script 8 two and a half is more commonly encountered than the Block 8 variant. While this is true in a broad sense--PCGS has certified 501 Script 8 pieces and only 160 Block 8 examples, all grades considered--the two subvarieties are comparable in rarity in grades of MS64 or finer. In fact, the PCGS Population Report indicates a scant population of only 16 examples of the Script 8 type in MS64 with one piece finer--an MS65. The Block 8 entry shows 10 coins at the near-Gem level with four better pieces, including an MS66 quarter eagle (11/08).
The current example exhibits frosty surfaces and rich, apricot-gold coloration throughout. Save for the typical weakness in the reverse shield, this piece is well struck and--all positive attributes combined--exudes ample eye appeal.
