Description:

Low Total-Mintage Date
1885 Three Dollar, PR62

1885 $3 PR62 NGC. CAC. With the second lowest mintage of business strikes, with only 801 produced, there is considerable date pressure on the proofs of this date. However, with only 109 proofs struck that does not significantly increase the number of 1885 threes available. A large percentage of the proofs minted appear to have survived, though, with a reliable estimate of 75 to 90 pieces believed extant today. The surfaces on this piece are bright yellow-gold with highly reflective mirrors in the fields. More noticeable than any post-striking defects are the heavy orange-peel surfaces seen on each side. Census: 5 in 62, 11 finer (11/08).(Registry values: N4719) (#8049)
