Select Mint State 1812 Half Eagle
Wide 5 D, BD-1

1812 $5 MS63 NGC. CAC. Wide 5D, Breen-6466, BD-1, R.3. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a, perfect dies. A beautiful orange-gold example that has blazing luster across the design elements. The open fields are only slightly subdued. Sharply struck throughout, and there are no consequential marks. The familiar curved die scratch within the horizontal shield stripes is strictly as made, and is diagnostic for BD-1. Only two die pairings are known for the 1812, with the Wide 5D BD-1 considered less rare than the Close 5D BD-2. Census: 40 in 63, 43 finer (11/08).
