Enticing PR63 Cameo 1891 Double Eagle

1891 $20 PR63 Cameo NGC. CAC. Regardless of the mintage of this issue's business-strike counterpart, the proof 1891 double eagles would be important prizes, not least thanks to a stated mintage of 52 pieces. Thanks to the business-strike production of 1,390 pieces for the circulating coins of the same year, however, the proofs get an added boost. While not enhanced in value to the same extent as dates like the 1883, 1884, or 1887, where proofs are the only option for a Philadelphia double eagle of that year, the bonus is nonetheless perceptible when perusing auction records.
Though the mintage of 52 pieces is similar to that of the 1889 and 1890 twenties, it is slightly more available in general than its fellows. Garrett and Guth estimate that "20 to 25 coins remain of the original mintage." By contrast, the numbers supplied by the authors for the other issues are 15 or less. This additional availability is likely to remain a mystery, but it has little impact on the coin's collectability.
The present Select Cameo coin is impressively mirrored beneath thin layers of distinctly milky patina, and rich sun-yellow luster shines through. The strike is sharp, as demanded of proofs, and subtle violet overtones grace the margins. Contrast is solid if not absolute, with considerable frost gracing the portrait and eagle. Though a handful of faint hairlines are visible in the fields, the overall visual appeal is strong. Census: 1 in 63 Cameo, 7 finer (11/08).
